Are you making a new start:

  • maybe entered for your first triathlon (and unsure how it happened or what to do now)?
  • to learn to swim or give mountain biking a go, but feel a mix of trepidation and doubt, (hopefully as well as some excitement)?
  • to get into a healthier, more active lifestyle but unsure how to make the first steps?

Whatever your starting point, ZigZag Alive aims to help you get going and on the way, surprising yourself and others with what you can do.

We teach swimming to complete beginners, helping them overcome their fear of being in the water and getting to the point where swimming is a real enjoyment.

We run introductory skills sessions for people wanting to give mountain biking a go, teaching the basics that help new riders feel confident and in control while enjoying the amazing trails and tracks on our doorstep.  We teach basic skills in on-road cycling too, helping you get the best out of yourself and your bike.

We can guide you through your first steps to jogging and running, developing carefully designed programmes to gradually get into running and make it a part of an active life.

We also support newcomers to triathlon who may be worried about one particular part but also looking for guidance to help them train and feel more confident about the challenge ahead.  We can help you prepare, go through all the details you might not have thought of and then get the very most out of your chosen race.

And we see all these new activities and others as part of a healthy, more enjoyable, active way of life.

" I DID IT!!! I DID IT!!! I did around 20 full lengths aaalmost without stopping!  ... Yay Thank you"

 - Nadia, novice swimmer and will-be triathlete

improve your fitness

Are you already active and want to:

  • build up your fitness further?
  • have a more structured approach to what you do, to be more consistent and get the results you want?
  • maybe improve a particular skill, like your swim stroke, or running speed?
  • simply get out and enjoy a challenging session under the watchful eye of a qualified guide or coach?

ZigZag Alive has a great mix of advice, help with planning training schedules and understanding the theory of improving fitness and technique, together with the actual practice of getting out there and doing it!

We can also offer guided mountain bike rides from around two to five hours for small groups or one to one, over some spectacular routes on the South Downs.  This is proven as a terrific complement to training for on the road triathlons - as well as of course for off road triathlons and long endurance mountain bike events such as cycling the whole of the South Downs Way.

We take a structured approach to training and improving fitness, using phasing through the year and a mix of different types of training in order to get the maximum benefit.  Our approach involves ensuring everyone understands the key principles of training and knows how every session fits in.  We believe in sharing knowledge and learning together, not in overcomplicating things or taking a “just do as the coach says” approach.

We strongly believe in working with other experts and will recommend trusted contacts for support in areas such as physiotherapy and sports massage, nutrition, bike fit and bike shops.

"Just wanted to say how brilliant your sessions are and how much I can feel the benefits.  I really enjoyed the session last night... thanks also for all your encouragement"

New challenges

Have you just signed up for a major event - and now wondering how to prepare (or why on earth you put your name down)?  This might be:

  • a big step up to a distance you’ve never done before, like a half or full Ironman triathlon
  • peaking for a major event, such as setting a marathon personal best time or grabbing a qualifying place for an international competition
  • a big endurance challenge like cycling the whole of the South Downs Way in three, two, maybe even one day
  • a big open water swim, having previously stuck to the confines of swimming in pools

Whatever your challenge we can help you prepare by assessing what will most help you achieve your goal and putting together a tailored training programme.

Age is no barrier!  Many of our clients are motivated to enter a big event because of a looming landmark birthday - so come with a mix of excitement together with doubts about whether they are really up to it.  Our experience is immensely positive and we love to see people surprise themselves with what they can do.  We’re also aware from personal experience of the need to adapt training with age as well as taking into account people’s many other commitments.

We support experienced, seasoned athletes who are looking for an edge - or sometimes just reassurance that they are not missing anything.  Our approach is to start with understanding your particular challenge and what other commitments you have.  From there we set out an overall phased plan and will recommend the level of coaching support that looks to be most appropriate to you.  We put a big emphasis on regular communications, keeping track of your training and how everything is progressing so as to adapt and advise along the way.

As with the improvers, our approach is based on taking a structured approach to training for a big event, planning out the ideal mix of different training and tapering down to peak at exactly the right moment.  We can also give advice on all the practicalities and minor details to address before a big performance.

We strongly believe in working with other experts and will recommend trusted contacts for support in areas such as physiotherapy and sports massage, nutrition, bike fit and bike shops.

"I feel 100% ready not just in the body but in the mind.  My confidence is high and ... I feel the plan will deliver."
